Microsoft has been working hard to make sure Office 2016 works on Sierra and indeed, it is first time in decades that Office was ready on day 1 of a new version of Mac OS. I am an unpaid volunteer and do not work for Microsoft. Nov 20, 2018 I have the latest version of Microsoft Office installed yesterday on Mac Mini, High Sierra, and cannot open aWord and Excel. What's the problem??? Hi Glenn, I need more. 2017-12-17 Just installed Sierra and wanted to see what works. So far from my testing the below work for me. Office 2016 for Mac is a version of Office that’s available as a one-time purchase from a retail store or through a volume licensing agreement. It will be supported with security updates and bug fixes, as needed, until October 13, 2020. The minimum supported macOS for Office 2016 for Mac is 10.10 (Yosemite).

Updates for Office 2016 for Mac are available from Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU). To use Microsoft AutoUpdate, start an Office application, such as Word, and then choose Help > Check for Updates. If you're an admin and want to update the computers in your organization with your existing software deployment tools, you can download and deploy the update packages for each application.

The build date is listed in parentheses, in a YYMMDD format, after the version number. The install package is used if you don't have the application already installed, while the update package is used to update an existing installation.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Lync have not been tested on macOS 10.13 High Sierra, and no formal support for this configuration will be provided.
Microsoft Office 16.5.1 Not Working With Mac Sierra 2017
Since October 10, 2017, Office for Mac 2011* is no longer supported. This means there will be no new security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options, or technical content updates. Refer to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle for more information.
* Lync for Mac 2011 has a limited time of Extended Support for security fixes.
